The Stakeholder forum on the implementation of the ECOWAS Regulation on Free-Roaming in West Africa
The ECOWAS Commissioner for Telecoms and IT, Dr. Isaias Barreto da Rosa, opened today in Abuja, the Stakeholder forum on the implementation of the ECOWAS Regulation on Free-Roaming in West Africa. This meeting assembles Telecoms operators, regulators and ministries in charge of Telecoms and IT from all ECOWAS Member States to define the implementation details of the free-roaming initiative for West Africa.
The ECOWAS regional roaming regulation was approved by the ECOWAS Council of Ministers in December 2017 in Abuja Nigeria and aims at allowing West African citizens to enjoy free mobile roaming when traveling between the 15 ECOWAS Member States. ECOWAS countries have six months to implement this regulation.
During his opening remarks, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Telecoms and IT emphasized that roaming in West Africa “is not only a business opportunity for mobile operators but also a social issue and a factor of exchange and regional integration.”
