Regional conference on harmonization of legislation on Cybercrime and Electronic Evidence
We started yesterday, September 11th, 2017 in Abuja, Nigeria, a regional conference on harmonization of legislation on Cybercrime and Electronic Evidence with rule of law and human rights safeguards.
This event is organized jointly by ECOWAS and Council of Europe and aims mainly at assisting ECOWAS Member-States to develop and harmonize their national cyber legislation.
During the opening ceremony, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Telecoms of IT, Dr. Isaias Barreto da Rosa, delivered the welcome address to the participants. He was preceded by the intervention of the representatives of the Council of Europe, African Union Commission as well as by the speech of the Deputy Head of the European Union Delegation to Abuja, Mr. Richard Young.
Given the cross border nature of cybercrime, the harmonization of legislation and international cooperation is of paramount importance. For ECOWAS the fight against cybercrime and the promotion of a safe cyber environment within the sub-region is indeed critical for the establishment of a single digital market in West Africa.
